What is conformation?
Conformation shows are not just beauty pageants for dogs. Ethical breeders bring what they believe are their very best breeding stock to be judged by others to ensure they are good examples of the breed.
Each breed has a "standard" in which judges are to conform to. Judges should be ensuring that the dogs are built to preform well at the job they were bred to do.
Conformation Judges make their choices according to their understanding and interpretation of these standards.
Dogs are assessed both standing and on the move. They compete first within their own breed. The breed winners go on to the group (breeds are loosely classified according to their purpose, gun dogs in one group, herding dogs in another, and so on), and at the end of the day the seven group winners vie for Best in Show honors. Best Puppy awards are also offered at breed, group and show level.
